This week’s bag features Star Fruit! Also called carambola, the fruit is named for its cross section which resembles a star. The fruit has a smooth, waxy skin that turns a light to dark yellow when ripe and the flesh is translucent. They are crunchy and very juicy. There are two main types: a smaller sour type and a larger sweet type. Ripe sweet type star fruits usually don’t have more than 4% sugar content so they are not overwhelmingly sweet. When unripe they have a tart flavor like a green apple. The entire fruit is edible and typically eaten out of hand soon after they ripen. They can also be used in cooking. They can be made into relishes and preserves, or cooked as a vegetable or in dishes with fish. What else is in the bag?
